Birmingham Airport traffic: Flights cancelled amid technical fault

Travel chaos continued today as several flights were cancelled at Birmingham Airport as air traffic control systems continued to be hit by a network-wide issue. A statement from the airport said: 'The effects of the UK-wide network-wide air traffic management system failure are expected to continue for some time to come and passengers are advised to check with their airline for flight status updates.'

The airport also said it was "working to understand what has caused the issue and timescales for when it will be resolved."

In a separate statement, the company said that customers would be able to purchase a refund, if they were already booked on an affected service, through the airlines directly.

Traffic at the airport is likely to be heavy Sunday, due to Alabama’s football team facing off with the Texas Longhorns in Austin. The airport warned fliers to allow extra time for their trip, and to expect longer lines at security checkpoints. The airport’s website notes that American and United Airlines have added nonstop flights between BHM and Austin this weekend.

Passenger numbers at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) are on track for another record year, with double-digit increases in both domestic and international long-haul passenger traffic. In June, the number of passengers through BHM rose 19% compared to the same month last year.

Emirates is to return the iconic Airbus A380 on its daily flights from Birmingham, a move that will see the company increase capacity by a further 6%. The A380, which flies to destinations across the globe, is located in Terminal 1 at the airport. The new terminal complex, completed in 1984, combines the original Terminals 2 and 3 via the Millennium Link into one large terminal building. The terminal contains the main departure gates and arrivals hall, as well as central security and airside shops and restaurants.

The junction that leads to the airport from the M42 can be particularly problematic during rush hour, thanks to its spiralling nature and the tendency for drivers to split lanes without warning. You can use RAC's route planner to find the best routes and avoid this stretch of the M42 during peak hours.
